About these units
Storage sizes come in two systems. Decimal (SI) units step by 1,000: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 KB and 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Binary (IEC) units step by 1,024: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes and 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB. Drive makers and most specifications use decimal units, while Windows and many programs count in binary but label the result KB, MB or GB, which is why a 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB. One byte is 8 bits.
FAQ
› How do I convert MB to KB?
1 MB = 1,000 KB. To convert, multiply the value by 1,000: 2 MB = 2,000 KB.
› What is 1 KB in MB?
1 KB = 0.001 MB. The reverse formula is MB = KB ÷ 1000.
› Is 1 MB 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?
In SI units 1 MB is 1,000 KB. The 1,024-based unit has its own name, the mebibyte (MiB). Some software still writes MB for 1,024 KB, so check which convention a number uses.
› Why does a new drive show less space than advertised?
The box uses decimal gigabytes (10⁹ bytes) while the operating system reports binary gibibytes (2³⁰ bytes) labeled GB. A 500 GB drive is about 465.66 GiB; no space is missing.
