What it does

Strip HTML Tags turns a page, an email template or a snippet of rich text into clean plain text. It removes every tag, throws away scripts, styles and comments, decodes entities such as & and  , and keeps the structure you care about: headings and paragraphs stay apart, list items stay on their own lines, and table cells stay in rows.

It is useful when you need the words without the markup: pasting copy from a CMS into a plain-text email, feeding content to a search index or a language model, counting words in an article, or checking what a screen reader or a text-only client would show.

How to use

  1. Paste HTML into the input, or open an .html file.
  2. Adjust the options if needed:
    • Keep paragraphs and line breaks turns block elements into blank lines or line breaks. Turn it off for a single line of text.
    • Collapse extra whitespace merges the spaces, tabs and blank lines that come from source indentation, the same way a browser does.
    • Decode entities turns <, é, ' and friends into real characters.
    • Keep link URLs writes each link as text (https://…) so the targets are not lost.
  3. Copy the text or download it as a file.

Example

The sample input is a small release-notes page with a title, a style block, a script, a heading, a paragraph with a link, a list and a line break. The output keeps only what a reader would see:

How it works

The HTML is processed as text with careful patterns instead of being loaded into a page, so nothing in it runs and no images or scripts are fetched. Attribute values that contain a > character are handled correctly, and unclosed comments or scripts are removed to the end of the input rather than leaking into the output.

Because the tool does not build a full document tree, very broken HTML may produce slightly different line breaks than a browser would show, but the text itself is always preserved.

FAQ

› Are scripts and styles removed too?

Yes. The contents of script, style, noscript and template elements are dropped completely, along with HTML comments and the doctype, so no code ends up in your text.

› Will paragraphs and lists survive?

With Keep paragraphs and line breaks turned on, headings, paragraphs and lists are separated by blank lines, list items and divs start a new line, and br becomes a line break. Turn it off to get one continuous line.

› What happens to entities like   and &?

They are decoded into the characters they stand for, so & becomes & and a non-breaking space becomes a normal space. Turn off Decode entities to keep them as written.

› Is my HTML uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, which also means nothing in the HTML is loaded or executed.
