5xx Server errors Non-standard

524 A Timeout Occurred

What it means

Cloudflare-specific: a connection to the origin was made, but the origin did not send an HTTP response in time (100 seconds by default).

Common causes

  • Long-running request such as a report or import
  • Slow database queries
  • Overloaded application

How to fix it

As a client or visitor

Retry later or use an asynchronous export if available.

As the site or API owner

Move long work to background jobs and return 202, or stream progress; Enterprise plans can raise the timeout.

FAQ

› Can I increase Cloudflare's 100-second timeout?

Only on Enterprise plans. Otherwise make the request faster or asynchronous.

› 524 vs 504?

524 is Cloudflare's own timeout page; 504 comes from any other gateway.
