What it means
The resource is permanently gone and no forwarding address is known. Unlike 404, the server states this on purpose.
Common causes
- Content was deleted intentionally
- An API version was retired
- Expired promotions or listings
How to fix it
As a client or visitor
Remove the link or bookmark; the resource will not return. For APIs, migrate to the replacement version.
As the site or API owner
Use 410 for deliberate removals so search engines drop the URL faster; use 301 if there is a real replacement.
Example response
HTTP/1.1
HTTP/1.1 410 Gone

FAQ
› Is 410 better than 404 for SEO?
Search engines may drop a 410 URL slightly faster, but both lead to removal from the index.
› Can a 410 page come back?
Technically yes, but clients may have forgotten it. Use 404 if you are unsure.
