What it does

Markdown tables are tedious to type: every row needs pipes, the second line needs dashes, and keeping the columns aligned by hand takes forever. This tool converts CSV or TSV data into a GitHub Flavored Markdown table that you can paste into a README, a pull request, an issue, a wiki page or any documentation that uses Markdown.

The CSV is parsed properly, so quoted fields with commas, doubled quotes and multi-line cells are handled. The output is padded so the columns line up in plain text, which makes the table easy to read and edit later.

How to use it

  1. Paste CSV or TSV, upload a .csv or .tsv file, or click Sample.
  2. Choose the Alignment: default, left, center, right, or Numbers right to right-align columns that contain only numbers.
  3. Keep First row is header on if the first row holds column names; otherwise the header becomes Column 1, Column 2 and so on.
  4. Switch off Align columns if you prefer compact rows without padding.
  5. Copy the table or download it as a .md file.

Rows with fewer cells than the header are padded with empty cells, so the table is always valid.

Example

This CSV:

Tool,Stars,Notes
ripgrep,48000,"Fast, recursive search"
fd,34000,find | but friendlier

becomes this Markdown table with Numbers right alignment:

| Tool | Stars | Notes |
| ------- | ----: | ---------------------- |
| ripgrep | 48000 | Fast, recursive search |
| fd | 34000 | find \| but friendlier |

The comma inside the quoted field stays in the cell, the pipe is escaped, and the numeric column gets a --: marker so it is right-aligned when rendered.

Tips

  • The alignment markers in the second row (:--, :-:, --:) control how the rendered table aligns each column.
  • Inline Markdown inside cells, such as **bold**, inline code or links, is kept and rendered by most viewers.
  • Very wide tables are hard to read on small screens; consider splitting columns into several tables.

FAQ

› Which Markdown flavor does the table use?

GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) pipe tables, which are also supported by GitLab, Bitbucket, Notion, Obsidian, Docusaurus, MkDocs and most static site generators. Plain CommonMark has no table syntax.

› What happens to pipes and line breaks inside cells?

A pipe character would end the cell, so it is written as \|. Line breaks are not allowed inside a table row, so they become <br> tags, which GitHub and most renderers display as a line break.

› Why do Chinese, Japanese or Korean columns line up?

With Align columns on, cells are padded by display width: wide East Asian characters count as two columns, so the raw Markdown stays aligned in a monospaced editor. The rendered table looks the same either way.

› Can I convert TSV copied from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Cells copied from a spreadsheet are separated by tabs, and the delimiter is detected automatically. You can also choose Tab explicitly.
