Bytes to Bits Converter

Convert bytes (B) to bits (bit). 1 B = 8 bit, and 1 bit = 0.125 B.

Formula

bit = B × 8

How to convert

To convert bytes to bits, multiply the value by 8. For example, 4,096 B = 32,768 bit.

Conversion table

Bytes (B) Bits (bit)
1 B 8 bit
8 B 64 bit
100 B 800 bit
512 B 4,096 bit
1,000 B 8,000 bit
1,024 B 8,192 bit
4,096 B 32,768 bit
10,000 B 80,000 bit
100,000 B 800,000 bit
1,000,000 B 8,000,000 bit

About these units

Storage sizes come in two systems. Decimal (SI) units step by 1,000: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 KB and 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Binary (IEC) units step by 1,024: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes and 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB. Drive makers and most specifications use decimal units, while Windows and many programs count in binary but label the result KB, MB or GB, which is why a 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB. One byte is 8 bits.

FAQ

› How do I convert B to bit?

1 B = 8 bit. To convert, multiply the value by 8: 4,096 B = 32,768 bit.

› What is 1 bit in B?

1 bit = 0.125 B. The reverse formula is B = bit ÷ 8.

› Is 1 MB 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?

In SI units 1 MB is 1,000 KB. The 1,024-based unit has its own name, the mebibyte (MiB). Some software still writes MB for 1,024 KB, so check which convention a number uses.

› Why does a new drive show less space than advertised?

The box uses decimal gigabytes (10⁹ bytes) while the operating system reports binary gibibytes (2³⁰ bytes) labeled GB. A 500 GB drive is about 465.66 GiB; no space is missing.
